Gilles Zark has studied photography and geography in University of Paris 8 Vincennes. While he has been working for many years professionally in the field of cartography, dealing with French cartographic information, he is developing recently also his artistic work. In his multi-media work (painting, graphics, drawings, installation ready-made, and photography) he is working with main principles of cartography: scale, territory, bi-dimensionality, surface, measuring units.

The design of this website reflects these preoccupations. It is layering different ways of perceiving territory and its image. It offers a bird-eye view but also an immersive perspective into the works, that permits traveling inside the image and discovering its fields of colour and information.

Gilles Zark a étudié la photographie et la géographie à l'Université Paris 8 Vincennes. Il travaille depuis de nombreuses années professionnellement dans le domaine de la cartographie, traitant de l'information géographique. Il développe également un travail artistique multimédia : peintures, graphismes, dessins, installations ready-made, photographies et impressions. Il travaille d'après les grands principes de la cartographie : échelle, territoire, bidimensionnalité, surface, unités de mesure, représentation.

La conception de ce site reflète ces préoccupations et propose différents couches de perception du territoire et de sa représentation. Il offre une vue plongeante mais aussi une perspective immersive dans les œuvres, qui permet de voyager à l'intérieur de l'image et de découvrir ses champs d'informations chromatiques et territoriales.

The 1meter unit of measurement always remains equal to itself and can be applied as a reference system to any environment. It is also an idea of ​​recurring interest in the arts. We can think that different measurement systems (perpetually adjusted to reality) not only shape the meaning we give to the environment, but also modify our imagination. Aerial observations of the territory generate geographical materialities, textures, but also specific colorings. I want to take samples of geographical information extracted from the “field” and supplement them with artistic interpretations. In my opinion, colorimetric vibration allows us to visualize a form of flow in representations of the landscape.

The original standard of 1 meter was established in Paris as the universal metric system shortly after the French Revolution. This standard appears in my work as a snapshot of the territory and defines the measure of my artistic pieces presented. The 1/1m format, the grid and the sample which both measure and structure the surface of the territory are reported in my work. In my paintings I combine different scales of representation on the same surface to converge towards territorial abstraction.

L'unité de mesure reste toujours égale à elle-même et peut être appliquée comme système de référence à n'importe quel environnement. Elle est aussi une idée d'intérêt récurrent dans les arts. On peut penser que de differents systèmes de mesure (perpétuellement ajustés á la realité) façonnent non seulement le sens que l'on donne á l'énvironment, mais modifient également l’imaginaire. Les observations aeriennes du territoire génèrent des matérialités géographiques, des textures, mais aussi des colorations spécifiques. Je souhaite prélever des échantillons d'informations géographiques extraites du « terrain » et les complétés par des interpretations artistiques. Selon moi, la vibration colorimetrique permet de visualiser une forme de flux visuel dans les représentations du paysage.

L'étalon original d'un métre a été établi à Paris comme système métrique universel peu après la Révolution française. L’étalon apparaît dans mon travail comme un instantané du territoire et definit la mesure de mes pieces artistiques presentées. Le format 1/1m, la grille et l'échantillon qui à la fois mesurent et structurent la surface du territoire sont rapportés dans mon travail. Dans mes peintures je combine différentes échelles de représentation sur la même surface pour converger vers l'abstraction territoriale.
